Festival of Speed 2006

Wednesday, July 12
Yesterday I went to the Goodwood Festival of Speed for the first time. And it's an understatement to say that was absolutely brilliant. The weather was horrendus at the start of the day but from 1100 it started getting better and ended warm, dry and sunny.

I've never been to a Formula One race, so it was incredible to be close enough to touch brand new F1 cars. Even screaming up the hillclimb they are only a few metres away. That's not to mention all of the other types of old and new racing and rally cars which were there. I took a while to find the F1 paddock and didn't get any autographs, but I did at least manage to see Jenson Button and Nigel Mansell.

It was interesting to see some of the 1967 F1 cars which I know so well from Grand Prix Legends.

The newly opened Richard Burns Foundation was also there.

And it was great to see the Red Arrows and a 747-400 doing aerobatics.

There is definately nothing quite like it.

I recorded some of the engine noises which you can hear here (MP3, 5.7 MB). It's cut so it isn't too long. The loud stuff (ie. older F1 cars) starts at about 1:40, and the LOUD stuff (ie. modern F1 cars being revved to buggery) starts at about 4:15.

Of course I also took photos, which you can see here - all 172 of them!

Eurovision Song Contest - Athens 2006

Tuesday, May 23

Just my thoughts on some of the songs...

ev_pic_04.jpg

4 - Latvia - Well, it was... different. Quite clever how it was entirely vocal, but a little ear-piercing at times.

6 - Spain - So Las Ketchup are still around then. Very mellow, not unlike Aserejé from a few years ago.

7 - Malta - Poor Fabrizio wasn't that bad was he? He deserved more than one point, and should have been higher than at least France.

ev_pic_14.jpg

14 - Lithuania - A nice, original, light-hearted song and I'm sad that it didn't do better.

15 - UK - I'm still feeling gutted. I actually felt sick. Daz had a great song, our best for years. We should have made it to at least tenth. Next year we'll go through the selection all over again and end up with yet another forgettable song. We were robbed.

17 - Finland - Lordi rock! Worthy winners and a good change for the competition.

Iceland - I'm actually quite disappointed that it didn't go through from the semi-final. Keeping in mind that Silvia is a fictional character, the song was quite good.

Belgium - How on earth didn't they go through? I though they were one of the favourites to win!

Now we have to wait another year for ESC 2007. It's always over too quickly. Now go and buy the DVD or the book.
